Erling and Lana: The “Art of Getting Married”
When two artists get married, all you can expect from the ceremony
is the unexpected. Erling was an Icelandic illustrator; Lana, a
Norwegian artist working in an art gallery. In planning their wedding,
they wanted something that would combine both their eclectic tastes,
with traditional elements from both their cultures. Some parts were
easy: they chose The Hammond Art Museum as the site for the ceremony,
and Lana’s flower girl walked down the aisle in a traditional
wedding dress her aunt made by hand. Now all they needed was the
music.
Erling wanted Tom Waits, his favorite singer, in the ceremony.
Lana wanted Norwegian music. With a little research, we chose to
use the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg for the bridal music –
Morning, on string quartet as Lana walked down the aisle,
and Wedding Day at Troldhaugen, later in the ceremony.
For Erling, I sang Tom Waits’ A Little Trip to Heaven,
accompanied by guitar and violin. Finally, for a touch of traditional
wedding elegance, we ended the ceremony with Lana and Erling walking
out to the string quartet’s rendition of Time to Say Goodbye
by Francesco Sartori.
